Mark from Hemel Hempstead

Nearer 50 than 40 (gulp!)

1st saw the Tones at the Winter Gardens at Bournemouth around 79...
I was on my own (around 19years old) and went for a Fry up in the cafe before hand. I sat next this group of lads who were chomping away on an all day breakfast. They were talking in a strong Irish accent, so I assumed they were fans who had flown over for the concert.
After they left, a bloke came up to me and said "You Know The Undertones then?" I had no idea!!! doh!!!

I am one of those Tones fans who love the early stuff, but fell-out of love with them after Julie Ocean (Sorry folks, but the later stuff just did not do it for me)

However saw they were touring again in 2005, and went along to one of the gigs. They were playing all the early stuff with an excellent front man in Paul, and they blew me away again.
It was like discovering them all over again! ...just a little older and greyer... a bit like me!

I was hooked, saw them around 6 more times in next 2 years....

Favourite Album - 1st one
Favourite 5 tracks - Thrill me, Runaround, Billys Third, Tearproof, Get Over You (geez the last 4 change constantly, but 'Thrill Me' will always be my best Tones track ever)

Also looking forward to The Dingwalls Gig....

Deargdoom(!)used to freqent the site years back but stopped due to 'differences' of opinion with some contributors.
Now live in Gods county,Donegal.
Hoping for a Derry gig very soon.Missed last Xmas gig as I was in England!
It would be great to think the Petrols play Derry soon as well.
In the mean time the Duke Special are playing the nerve centre in December!

I'm Phil, I'm from Leeds (u don't say....)

Just about to hit 45.

First saw 'Tones at Bradford St Georges on the Hypnotised tour. Then saw them 3/4 other times.

We bumped into Feargal on the way in :P and he signed my ticket!!!! Still got it somewhere.

The Undertones were (are?) my favest EVER band. I just adored them. I have ever single released up to the split.

Fave tracks? 'You got my Number', 'Chocolate and Girls', 'Mars Bars', 'Get over You' 'Tearproof' 'There goes noman' .... and of course TK.

Basically the first two albums. They were never off my turntable.

Once saw SLF do TK live - was great.

Got the 'DYD album last year - not bad at all. A real grower.

The thing that makes my heart leap now is that my kids (11/13) also love the 'Tones and we often sing 'mars bars or 'TGN' on the school run in the car.

Other bands? Ruts, Spizz, Clash, Jam, SLF etc etc all the punk bands. Now? Leeds finest Kaiser Chiefs.

Middle aged or what?

Ok so admin has raised the subject and some here have said that they miss the banter.
So here goes....

Do The Undertones only appeal to middle aged blokes? (I mean this in a purely platonic sense folks)
Who is the youngest person here? - raise your iPod please
Who is the oldest person here? - rattle your zimmer frame please

Why no girls?
My theory is that most of the songs articulated how blokes feel, from a bloke perpective, using short words that blokes can understand.
Having said that the crowd at Dingwalls had a fair smattering of ladies, including the young lady that got Billy's drumsticks down at the front. My own daughter really rates the group and my fair wife thinks that they are brilliant, her favourite track being Thrill me.

Please see another thread for the competition, the old dot net site had the "humdingers on tour" competition, it's time we had one here too.

Great Thread .... I think!

Whats Middle-Age? i am Nearing the big 50, is that still classed as Middle-age?
Totally unfit, but still manage to prance around at 3 Tones gigs a year. My only 3 bits of exercise a year as well.
...and I Wear glasses.

talking about glasses.... Do you see how many People at Tones Gigs wear glasses? Its actually quite amusing to see.

Well if we get a few more gigs this year we can get to see a big bunch of Middle-Age blokes wearing glasses.

I think the answer is a little more simple than that. It was the Tones fault. Look how many songs they recorder with the word "Girls" in the title. They were quite clearly focusing their music towards a young virile spotty teenager in their 70's (just like Me).

see, its simple really.

i will get my coat. Matron more pink pills please.

Now this is more like it, random insults, comments on specs (they're not the problem it's their horrible faces)

Can we keep this going with more threads, even at our ages it's never too late to enjoy dumb entertainment
