I always keep an eye and ear on today’s Top 40 in the vain hope that sooner or later a brilliant act will pop up. Fat chance and the charts of today continue to be dominated by rap artists and dodgy screeching female singers. I know that I’m gong to come across like an old duffer but compare today’s scene to the charts from the year 1979 when I was an impressionable 13 year old. In addition to The Undertones classics Get Over You, Jimmy Jimmy, Here Comes The Summer and You’ve Got My Number during that year we also had (in no particular order):

Silly Thing – The Sex Pistols
Accidents Will Happen - Elvis Costello
I Fought The Law - The Clash
Babylon's Burning - The Ruts
Harmony In My Head - The Buzzcocks
I Don't Like Mondays – The Boomtown Rats
Gangsters – The Specials
Reasons To Be Cheerful (Pt 3) - Ian Dury and the Blockheads
Hersham Boys - Sham 69
Duchess - The Stranglers
The Prince - Madness
Time For Action - Secret Affair
Eton Rifles - The Jam
The Sound Of The Suburbs – The Members
Into The Valley – The Skids
Millions Like Us – The Purple Hearts

To name just a few. Most of these bands released other excellent stuff that year.

Beat that kids of 2009!

Hey Mark

That looks just like a playlist from my I-Pod. Some cracking Tunes! Sure you have not been scobbling me from Last FM eh... ;)

Not one duff tune in that lot, maybe except the Stranglers!
The one better-known group of the era I never 'got' was the stranglers. All my mates said I was nuts, as they were the Dogs B's. but for some reason the Stranglers never did it for me.
I just checked the I-Pod again and I have just one tune "SOMETHING BETTER CHANGE" thats it... sums it up I suppose.

I See from that lot you were also into the Mod Scene too.

I am going to see Secret Affair on the 30th and then to make my day, I received an e-mail this morning from FROM THE JAM,,, the new tour is announced...
happy days!

what a cracking playlist.... although not sure about the mod stuff (bar The Jam of course).

I have an ipod full of "what's this stuff, Dad..?" music that just knocks today's pap into a cocked hat.
